Actor Pratibha Ranta, who played Jaya in Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies, said she is “beyond excited” that her film has been chosen as India’s official Oscar entry. The film, which saw a theatrical release in March, became popular after its release on Netflix in April.
Prathibha expressed her happiness after Laapataa Ladies’ big feat. She said, “I’m beyond excited that Laapataa Ladies has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Oscars! This film holds a special place in my heart, especially my character, Jaya.”
She also said, “I believe the story beautifully resonates with audiences worldwide, showcasing themes of love, loss, and the search for Individuality. It’s a celebration of our culture and an invitation for international viewers to experience the richness of Indian storytelling. I’m grateful to be part of such an important project!”

Laapataa Ladies was competing against titles like Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal, Kartik Aaryan’s Chandu Champion, Prabhas’s Kalki 2898 AD, National Award-winning Malayalam film Aattam, Rajkummar Rao’s Srikanth, Vicky Kaushal’s Sam Bahadur, and others.
